oil change guaranteed by Washington / boycott

Let me get this straight. If Detroit goes belly-up, and you buy a car subsequently, your service will be guaranteed by Washington. So if you take your car in and are unhappy with the result I assume you have to call your Congressman.I am confident that will reassure prospective car buyers.
As long as the President is micromanaging Detroit,he should make sure that the cars they produce are in line with the desires of Main St.Gas mileage is nice, but Americans still like luxury, and speed.
At the end of the day,the market will deciede on which company will survive, and not Washington.Let them go bankrupt,if that is the path to renegotiated contracts etc,and like the airlines, the consumer will respond.

===================================================================================
More and more markets in Europe etc. are boycotting products from Israel because
of the Gaza operation, or because of the "occupation ".Perhaps it is time for Americans to boycott those countries who are at fault by not purchasing pravoiding oducts and tourism.

E-1 /

While I have complained for many years about the mickey mouse method of putting together a cabinet in Israel, there are some advantages. The most important result of this silly season, has been the secret agreement between Bibi and Lieberman that the E-1 corridor will be built.Anyone who has visited Maale Adumim ,Ir David,Ras Al-Amoud and Abu Dis understands that without the buildup of thousands of Israeli homes in this corridor, the Arabs would have a direct route,in a contiguous manner to Har Habayit-(the Temple Mount). This is their plan for a divided Jerusalem, with the Palestinian capitol being there.E-1 totally prevents that. The plan have been approved, and besides the police station,a massive roadworks project has been completed to support the housing. The project was put on hold because of US pressure. Now however,is the time to quickly put facts on the ground.
Secondly, though I believe Barak like most of the leaders are arrogant and self-centered,he is a master military strategist. With the aid of people like Mofaz and Yaalon, the final planning for the Iranian attack will be smoother. As we get closer to that day,I would expect Kadimah to secretly join the Security Cabinet, and the a National Unity Govt.

How sad that the PA dismantled and punished their youth orchestra who played in Israel to commemorate the Holocaust.
Real partners in Peace!

The Last LIon

You always learn new things!
Of course we all know about Edward Kennedy and Chappaquidick. Now in a book review in this weeks Weekly Standard,Phillip Terzian points out that he was exspelled ftom Harvard for hiring a substitute to take a Spanish exam.
SUCH IS THE HISTORY OF SOMEONE WHO THE LIBERALS ARE NOW CALLING THE "LAST LION". As Terzian points out they called Churchill that but our Edward, even if he Sir Edward is no Winny.

Obama without the teleprompter

I have 2 observation s about Obama as a public speaker and top saleseman for his policies.
During the campaign I couldn't help but be impressed with his eloquence and ability to hold an audience.I did not realuze that he was a captive of the teleprompoter. That is why he did not sparkle in the debates-no prompter. Now since taking office, besides the prompter gaffe, where he welcomed himself, his opening statements to the press appear canned, and written by his speechwriter (which they are). The impromptu answers are often pompous, or almost angry if it is a sharp question.
The second observation,is that so much of his political success is based on hia speeches(Dem convention ) that he really believes he can solve every problem of the world with a pep talk...
peace in the ME is on the way..we can solve our economic crisis by going greater into debt and forget the Congressional budget office estimates...America can solve the European economic problems, even though we had a great role in causing it..we can make great progress with Iran,if we only could talk to them and so on. .
HE IS STILL YOUNG,AND IT WILL TAKE A FEW HARD KNOCKS FOR HIM TO REALIZE THAT THERE ARE REAL BAD GUYS OUT THERE....LIKE IRAN,RUSSIA ,N. KOREA, HAMAS AND OTHER TERRORISTS ETC, AND THEY HAVE LITTLE USE FOR GLIB TALK OTHER THAN TO RUN THE CLOCK AS THEY PRPARE FOR MISCHIEF.

Labor-Likud / AIG

About 4 weeks ago,or perhaps longer,I raised the high probability of Ehud Barak joining the cabinet with his party. It is almost unbelievable that Bibi who ran on the right, should give away so many mandates to Labor. What will be left for the 5 or 6 Likudniks who worked for Bibi , joined the party for him,and now will be out in left field? Perhaps a cabinet member without portfolio. It is not clear yet at this time what if anything is to be with Avigdor Lieberman.Do not be suprised if Bibi fails, that in the next election Lieberman will wind up[ as numbere one

For the umpteenth time, the whole AIG bonus controversy is a smokescreen for the whole concept of " too large to fail". Sheila Bair, the head of the FDIC who seems to be the most level headed of the financial team in Washington testified before Congress that it is time for just such action. If you broke up AIG into smaller parts, successful companies would take over the slack, and those who deserve to fail will do so.In our system we do not (nor should we) reward failure .
Wall Street and corporate Amerixca, are getting their just desserts for supporting Obama during this election. In retrospect, the best Republican candidate would have been Gov. Romney, with such a vast economic background

A Geithner Reprieve (for how long?)

I just completed our semi-annual drive from Florida to Fort Lee.Our inter-atate highway system from Florida to Maryland without ,tolls is quite a feat. Why the NYC briges cannot use the same methods of E-Z Pass payment without thr barrier closing after each car is beyond me.
Of course the ride was made more pleasant by the new of the huge Wall St. response to the bailout of the toxic assets.I did not have an opportunity to get the details, however 2 things come to mind.
1-the way the Congress and the public are in a "hanging mood", why would private companies want to get involved in dealing with the govt., when the rules can retroactively change, and you could wind up before a Congressional firing squad?
2-Who wiull determine the worth of the assets the banks are getting rid of?Certainly the interests of the banks, the private investors and the treasury are at odds.

Iran /Syria / Hamas

On the same weekend that the public is becoming aware of the role that Iran played in financing the N. Korea-Syria reactor, comes news of the Obama outreach to Iran.
One should read todays op-ed by John Bolton in the WSJ Of course Iran will make some positive moves, all for the purposes of killing time as they move along their way to nuclear proficiency.
Israel does not have the benefit of waiting ad infinitum. Therefore, Obama should realize that this is a slippery slope dealing with Iran, and we will fall off the slope if we are not careful.

The response of the Syrians that they can deal with Netanyahu is intresting. There can be negotiations, if Israel promises to give back all of the Golan, and agrees to the "right of return".
Sounds simple-what's left to negotiate?

Since the Egyptian negotiations between the PA and Hamas broke down because the latter will never recognize Israel, what point is there for Israeli-PA negotiations?
The PA does not represent Gaza, and if there were W. Bank elections, Hamas would probably win.
The whole idea of 2 States is ridiculous, especially since Abbas wants Jerusalem as his capital. This plus refugees, are non-starters.

An Administration in disarray

The Jim Joseph scholarships are through Jewish Federations
(to clarify a point)

It is amazing that Congress has no problem with 18 BILLION dollars of earmarks snuck into the appropriatiions bill, but hits the ceiling for 165 Million of bonuses, they and the White House and the Fed knew about.Surely immoral but yet legal.

What is truly amazing .sad and even depressing is that because the stimulus "had to be passed on a Friday", not a SINGLE member of the Congress could read a word of it prior to voting. Then the President waits until Tues to sign it.
Where was the transparency? where was the opportunity for Americans to examine this bill in the quiet of their homes on their computers, and be given a chance to communicate with their elected officials?
Is this democracy at work?
This "CHANGE" is all BS!
IT IS POLITICS NOT ONLY AS USUAL, BUT IN CAMPAIGN MODE.Take away the teleprompter, and the President is just a slick fast talker without a handle on how to run this country.
As was said in the campaign ,he never ran anything in his life,(someone said ...not even a candy store) and he and Geithner are out of their leagues.
THE UNNECRSSARY TRADE WAR WITH MEXICO OVER TRUCKING PRECIPIITATED BY THE TEAMSTERS, AND THE THREATS OF THE CHINESE FOR A SIMILAR BUT WORSE WAR OVER CAP AND TRADE,SHOWS THAT HIS POLICY ON TRADE IS POORLY THOUGHT OUT.
We still await a plausible policy on the toxic assets of banks, and that as part of the housing crisis is where he should be devoting his time.
GET THE TREASURY DEPT UP TO STAFF!
The trillions and trillions of dollars in projected deficits which his energy and health plans will yield are frightening.

One last point while I am venting. The word "terrorist" is absent from the vocabulary of Homeland Security Sec. Nepalitano, and now the A-G talks about releasing some Guantanimo prisoners into our society
.I have an idea, why not help them upon their release to get a large campsite for terrorist training,so that they will not have to plot to get their colleagues into the country to commit mayhem.? We can send the Hamas people from Gaza there for indoctrination,on the scholarships promised by Sec. Clinton.

Jim Joseph Foundation / Fatah vs PLO / Dodd /Rosen

This Passover,as I previously mentioned I will once again serve as scholar-in-residence at the old Granit Hotel( Hudson Valley Resort). One of my topics will be the "Recession and its effect on the Jewish middle class".Of course yeshiva tuition is one of the most serious problems for people who have lost their jo
Thus I was pleased to read that the Jim Joseph Foundation has granted millions in scholarships for yeshivas and summer camps in 5 cities. For a number of years I served on the Board of the Foundation while Jim was alive.
Hopefully other Foundations will follow suit..===

================================================================

Sen. Dodd looked confused and foolish today ,as he first denied then admitted his role in the AIG bonuses. His poll numbers already down should decrease even more. The Democrats shouyld be watching the latest Rasmussen poll which shows generic Republicans for the first time beating Dems.

===================================================================

It is interesting to hear former Gaza boss Dahlan, who was Abbas' man before being overthrown by Hamas, advise Hamas never to recognize Israel. His point is tha Arafat and the PLO recognized Israel and not Fatah. Sounds like a good peace-partner.

==========================================================

It is good to see Steve Rosen writing for Dan Pipes organization.I wrote a long time ago, that he deserved support within the pro-Israel community. His expertise will supplement Pipes who is an expert on terrorism.

BILL OF ATTAINDER

ARTICLE 1 SECTION 9,CLAUSE 3 OF OUR CONSTITUTION IS
KNOWN AS THE EX-POST FACTO BILL. IT IS A LEGISLATIVE ACT THAT PREVENTS EXACTLY WHAT PEOPLE IN WASHINGTON WISH TO DO TO AIG EMPLOYEES!

"Bills of attainder and ex-post facto laws, impairing the obligations of contract are contrary to the first social compact and to every principle of of social legislation" JAMES MADISON ..Federalist Papers ,44, 1778
In addition ,many of those in line for bonuses are not US citizens.
Also The Dodd Amendment to the Stimulus package specifically prohibits preventing the AIG bonuses.AIG was a large political contributor to him and Obama.

The talk of taxing 95% of the bonuses is just political nonsense.(at least to this non-lawyer)

Of greater import-why is AIG bailing out foreign banks with US money?
Why doesn't Sec Geithner own up to his role while at the Fed in giving these monies to AIG, and then while as Sec.of Treaury, another 30 billion without any investigation of their intentions.
I agree with Sen. Shelby, Geithner, the "golden -boy" should resign. The Obama economic team is in shambles.

AIG an alternate point of view

All day AIG has been on the minds of talk shows, cable news, politicians and the Pres. There has been unanimous condemnation.

Of course I don't think one rewards failure, certainly not with my money. However, the feeding frenzy has shed much heat but little light.
We have no evidence that the Govt. placed any strings to the billions given to AIG.Nor, did they ask the company what were the future contractural obligstions to staff, especially overseas.
The govt. did not want AIG to go bankrupt-had they done so, all contracts would be subject to court approval.
Who are the individuals getting the bonuses? Were all of them contracted before the bailout?
Were these primarily in foreign countries?
Is it true, that legal counsel feels that failure to carry out the contract could cause serious financial harm-greater than the sum of the bonuses/
What are the reasons that AIG is sending huge sums to foreign banks? Is this part of their normal routine? Is it related to their recovery?
Why did the govt not place conditions on the money before it was given?
The head of AIG, was appointed by the govt, and has only one desire to rehabilitate the company-he gets no bonus.
Those departments that caused the financial problems , should have had rheir staffs fired. It is not the governments job to micro-manage ,unless they want to run the company.
Failure to make money is not a crime in a financial institution. dismissal-sure,but subpenos?
Remember when a patient dies, absent malpractice , the doctor gets paid.

I believe this is a complicated situation.Yelling into the microphone as oart of a political campaign surely inflames the public, however the public is poorly served.

The EU / BIBI

The EU has demanded that Israel immediately open the gates to Gaza.-Fine!
Israel should demand of the EU-
stop the rockets
stop the arms smuggling
stop building more tunnels
carefully inspect each(Gaza-bound) truck and box
for contraband
sounds fair!

===================================================================

You certainly can get a headache from the Bibi negotiations with the other parties. It is all posturing, and sadly difficult to believe anything they say or that is written about them.
It is a corrupt and archaic system.
Please wake me up when the govt. is sworn in, or after they have another set of elections.

N. KOREA / HIZBOLLAH / PRES. OBAMA

What we don't hear is the US position on the antics of N. Korea. The Japanese have stated clearly that if the missile seems to be going their way, they will shoot it down.
After all the wasted diplomacy with N. Korea and the blackmail isn't it time for us to say clearly we will not tolerate a missile test.
Believe me, Iran watches carefully. They know that if we act weak there, we can be pushed around, and they will do it.

The US is correct to let the UK know that we disagree with their overtures to Hizbollah. They are a terrorist organization in the employ of Iran. You cannot differentiate between a political and military wing of sn organization like Hamas,Hizbollah or Al Quida.

It is no secret that I disagree with the social and most of the foreign policy initiatives of the President. However,I am truly impressed with his oratorical and political skills.
I was silly and immature enough to hope that maybe there would be a change in the Washington culture.Alas, he is just simply another politician, who is very glib, but a poor administrator, who wants to accomplish everything at once even if they are poorly thought out.
A real ideaologue.
His promises on -No lobbyists, careful vetting- real post partisan consultations-no earmarks-no signing statement-5 days transparency before signing bills and so on -all are simply campaign rhetoric. And the Dems with Rangel. Murtha ,Dodd etc are setting themselves up for a mirror image of Republican sins

NYT AND FREEMAN / THE UN / GOV. SANFORD

I don't read the NYT for many reasons, icluding its anti-Israel bias.I also find the editorials and most of their columnists too far left for my blood pressure. The matrimonial section on Sun. with "gay marriages" is like icing on a sour cake.
Thus,I did not realize that the paper with all that they think is fit to print, didn't have a word about the Chas Freeman appointment, and the furor it created. It was too good an appointment of an anti-Israel individual. to upset the applecart.
I thank my brother-in-law Kal Hartstein for pointing out the Politico article.

Shame on UN Sec.-Gen Ban who insulted the US for claiming that we are not spending enough to support the UN.We are by far the largesr UN contributor ,and have seen very little reorganization and wiping out of corruption ( oil for food ! ) as promised.

I am not a costitutional lawyer, however it seems to me that the provision placed into the stimulus package regarding State Legislatures might be unconstitutional.Gov. Mark Sanford wishes to reject the federal funds, because in 2 years they will run out, and the State will be left holding the bag. The same goes for unemploynent funding. However,if the State legislature overules the Gov,.then the money will go to the state. Can a Gov. veto this?

Chas Freeman

While we should be pleased with the withdrawal of Chas. Freeman from the Intelligence Board,we should not read too much into it.
This appointment was not made by the White House or even cleared by it before Blair announced it.The candidate was poorly vetted, and between his own remarks on Israel and China,as well as his business affiiliations, he was doomed from the beginning.Although I didn't write about him,I told friends he would not last too long.
However, this has nothing to do with the Obama slant toward Syria,Abbas,Hamas and Iran.Nor does it speak to all the outreach to Gazans with scholarships and funding. It also does not change the 4 warnings from the US to Israel on settlements and Gaza.
We are only beginning,as Bibi puts together his team.,With or without Freeman, it may not be pleasant.

STEM CELL APPROVAL /JEANS IN THE KNESSET

HAPPY PURIM TO ALL OUR FRIENDS AND READERS

CONGRATULATIONS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA-YES YOU HAVE IT RIGHT-FOR HIS ACTIONS YESTERDAY REGARDING STEM CELL RESEARCH.

Jewish law does not regard these stem cells as human "lives",and the enlightened leadership in our Rabbinic community have endorsed this move.Of course we do not know what if anything positive will result, however as long as we stay within ethical boundaries,we must do whatever it takes to save lives and ameliorate suffering.
The President is right that cloning of human beings is not an ethical or moral endeavor, and the full penalty of the law should be instituted to prevent scientists both government and privately funded from moving in that direction.

This morning while reading the megillah,I was taken by the sentence that Mordechai knew that one does not approach the palace in "sack-cloth".In other words, when you appear before royalty,it is incumbent to dress properly.
In everyday life, those who attend synagogue come before "royalty" to make their case.Sadly, one sees mature men wearing shorts, sandals without socks and all type of beach wear, sometimes with tzizith (fringes) flying.Of course it is against Jewish law ,but against common decency.
Which brings me to the incoming Speaker of the Knesset,Reuben Rivlin (Likud) who has announed that he will once again allow jeans in the knesset, removing the ban by Speaker Dalia Itzik.
I have spent many many hours in the halls of Congress and when you walk through the Knesset, you feel a sense of less than pride in the dress and demeanor of the staffs and the visitors.

Tuoro Medical School

Purim is a time for parody and kidding around. And so in that spirit I thought the news that Tuoro College was buying New York Medical College was in the Purim mode.
Except that I know the genius of Dr. Bernard Lander the President of Tuoro, who has built the school into a world-wide instituion.Over the years, I have come to respect him for his intellect and his ability to make his school grow in so many diverse areas.
For about 4 months I volunteered to be the Chairman of the Women's College prior to my becoming OU Pres, and saw up close his unbelievable talent.
On one occasion I brought together Dr. Lander and Itamar Rabinovich then Israeli Ambassador to the US, and currently Pres of Tel Aviv Univ.Dr. Lander asked me to stay for a few minutes,as he went over his background.I was amazed at his accomplishments, from serving in the LaGuardia cabinet in NYC,to his role in Notre Dame U. as well as YU.
For a few years I was Assoc. Clinical Prof of Surgery at New York Medical College at Valhalla. They have the potential to become a top tier hospital and school, and I wish my old friend Dr. Lander much good health and success.

A wasted war

It is so difficult for the outsider to understand how the Israeli Govt.chooses and follows up on policies.Surely it is not like the US.where the Pres. is responsible for administration decisions, following internal debate.
PM Olmert appears to be right on target in blasting Defense Minister Barak, for going to war in Gaza, expending life and material, and now only a very short time after withdrawal, dissipating any gains. Not only is the smuggling continuing, but the rockets keep coming into Israel and Hamas appears stronger than ever as it is poised to join a "unity" govt with Fatah.Of course there is no sign of the release of Shalit.Above and beyond this is the fact that despite the resignation of PM Salem Fayyad of the PA,the US will encourage the Egyptians to make a Fatah-Hamas deal. The deals on the table that Barak supposedly supports, were there before the invasion,so what was gained?
All of us know, that the outcome of such a deal is the ultimate election of Hamas in the west bank, and a Hamas takeover as they did in Gaza in June 2007 with minimal effort.
Hamas might make some declarations about peace, but will never recognize Israel.
This would be a victory for Iran, which sits on the sidelines as it foments war and tragedy.
The Pro-Israel community will have its hand full fighting for a Bibi govt. with Lieberman as FM,and right wing parties in the govt.In addition a 61 member bloc is not stable, and the threats of any faction could bring the govt. down. The country needs electoral reform as never before, however Shas opposes it.

OLMERT

I CAN'T FINISH OFF THE WEEKS BLOGGING WITHOUT A THUMBS DOWN FOR EHUD OLMERT,SOON TO BE INDICTED ON 3 MAJOR COUNTS, WHO SAID THAT THERE CAN BE NO PEACE WITHOUT DIVIDNG JERUSALEM.
SUCH A PEACE IS A PRESCRIPTION FOR WAR,AND THE END OF THE JEWISH STATE.THANKFULLY HIS DAYS AS PM ARE NUMBERED.PERHAPS IF CONVICTED HE WILL HAVE TIME IN PRISON TO THINK ABOUT THE EVIL HE WISHES ON INFLICT ON JEWISH HISTORY.
IT IS BEYOND BELIEF THAT SOMEONE WOULD WANT TO GIVE THE ARABS AUTHORITY OVER THE TEMPLE MOUNT AND THE SITE OF THE FUTURE BAIS HAMIKDOSH

Clinton--Kerry

KUDOS TO THE OU FOR OBJECTING STRENUOUSLY AND LOGICALLY TO SEC. CLINTON'S WORDS ON JERUSALEM.
As the statement said, and confirmed by the Jerusalem Mayor,Israel is a democracy with laws that apply to all. Jewish and Arab homes built without permits have been demolished, and that is all there is to say.
Thank G -d Bush beat Kerry 5 years ago.As we see in todays Senate Foreign Relations Comm hearing which he chairs 2 old anti-Israel hands Brezinski and Scowcroft testified, that the US should not pay any attention to Israel in regard to Iran. The choice of these 2 tells it all.

Cong Shelley Berkely of Nevada, an old friend has suggested that no US aid go to Gaza until Shalit is released.Good Girl !

The Treasury Dep looks like it is leaderless. Now we know that 2 individuals slated for Deputy Treasury Sec ,and choice for Int. Affairs Undersec have withdrawn their names.

Iran / Rush

The editorial in this mornings WSJ,and the JP story on the report of the Washington Institute of Near East Policy, should serve as a real wake-up call to the President on the ticking nuclear clock of Iran.
It is too late to try to play games with Russia regarding delivery of nuclear products and batteries of protective missiles which have been sent to Iran.
When Ehud Barak talks of "options" if diplomacy-economic sanctions don't work.as the WSJ points out it is clear to everyone that he is referring to mulitary (unilateral by Israel ) action.
That is why I believe in the end Barak will stay on as Defense Minister even if his party is upset.
Sec. Clinton knows full well all the options and scenarios, however like a good Obama soldier she is parroting the party line. There is no sense talking to Abbas if Hamas won't change its tune.
Israel cannot allow steel and concrete into Gaza that would allow Hamas to fortify bunkers. That is besides the Shalit question, and the issues of rockets and weapons smuggling.
What is needed is a total economic blockade, including gasoline which Iran must import.Beyond that is a date certain for action.

====================================================================================
While I find Rush entertaining for a few minutes, there is no way I can tolerate 3 hours of his talking. He is however well informed and provocative.
I really only hear some of his program when I am in the South for the winter.
The decision of the White House from the President on down, may make sense to them in the short run. However it is demeaning for a President to respond in such a manner.
Moreover,Rush is on 5 or 6 days a Week, and he can keep this battle on indefinately. He loves it.However attacking Rush tit for tat will only cloud so many issues the Dems want to concentrate on.Look at how much cable news time is devoted to Rush, and how this over and over again highlites the left wing anti-capitalist agenda of the Obamaites.

Food prices for Passover

As a followup of yesterdays blog regarding Passover hotel programs,we should not lose sight of the fact that the overwhelming majority of Jews of all religious persuasions, stay at home. Thus, they are forced to shop at supermarkets and other establishments that carry kosher foods.
Traditionally, many products are marked up by the stores prior to holidays, since they have a captive audience. This is true of wholesalers as well as retailers.
In light of the economy, now is the time for synagogues, local and national kashruth and synagogue organizations and especially RABBIS to become pro-active..They must visit stores and note prices of matzoh ,wine ,meat, fish etc.,and try to cajole them to hold the line on price increases.Publicizing their responses would be a sourc of public pressure.
The Rabbis do have an additional power.I recall as a child, when the price of esrogim was off the wall, that certain rabbinic leaders threatened that they would only allow each synagogue to buy one or two esrogim ,but not individuals. The threat of huge losses changed the picture.
During WW II we had meatless days and so on.
The consumer if organized has the power of the purse, and we should use it.

Passover economic woes

This morning's Palm Beach Post has an article on the failed dreams of developers in Port St. Lucie Fl. They built a 94,000 square foot clubhouse sorrounded by 140 mansions.with room for another 800 homes. There was to be a golf club and a private spa .Truly a tribute to luxury and extravagence. Now assets are being sold in bankruptcy Court.
The thought that the bull market would never end and home prices would never fall has claimed many victims. Our community has not been spared.
I am reminded of the huge opulent bar mitzvahs and weddings that all of us have attended. Each one trying to outdo their neighbor.
Suddenly the economic facts of life that we observe every day are hitting our community .Tuition at Yeshivas are out of sight, and many have multiple children who not only go to school, but have been accustomed to go to summer camp, where the fees just about equal to tuitions. Many will have to either avoid camp,or cut down to one month, as the burdens of our lifestyle comes face to face with reality.
Most of these economic hardships are really dealt with within the privacy of the home. However there is a public barometer, and it is ugly.
For years Passover has been a time that growing numbers of families went to hotels for the holiday. As time went on,the hotel properties became more opulent and expensive. The programs have raised the prices accordingly and tried to offer 5 star food, etc.Programs from Israel,Italy,Spain,Puerto Rico,Canada and all parts of the US.competed with the finest wines, entertainment and lectures.
Usually if you were to walk around the dining room of these hotels, you would realize that there were probably 3 generations(occasionally 4 )sitting together, more than likely all being paid for by the grandfather. It didn't take much arithmetic to realize the financial totals involved in such endeavors.
The lucrative market was such, that every year new and more expensive properties in esoteric places opened. In addition to the basic cost ranging from 2-5 ,000 dollars per person ,plus tips and tax there was a travel cost to all but local hotels.
Alas, this year, despite pages and pages of advertisements in Anglo-jewish media ,many of these hotels like the above mentioned housing extravaganza, will not open.Reservations are way down, and the hotels are demanding that the contracts which call for guaranteed numbers be lived up to.One hotel in Miami, is combining with a second one.The huge cost of these efforts is becoming a burden to many.
Perhaps next year, there will be a return to more moderate priced programs.Of course there will always be those who can afford only the best. However, the programs will be careful because the cost to run these programs and the potential for the program operator to lose their guarantees is great.
It is interesting that my friends the Hochdorfs who for 35 years have run the old Granit Hotel (now Hudson ValleyResort-which by the way is where I seve as Scholar -in -residence) is totally sold out.

Bibi

My brother sent me the following

Subject: Netanyahu at his best

Even those who aren't particularly sympathetic to Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu, could get a good measure of satisfaction from this interview with British Television this week. I guess it can be attributed to Netanyahu's days studying history at Harvard.
The interviewer asked him: "How come so many more Palestinians have been killed in this conflict than Israelis?"
(A nasty question if there ever was one!)
Netanyahu: "Are you sure that you want to start asking in that direction?"
Interviewer: (Falling into the trap) Why not?

Netanyahu: "Because in World War II more Germans were killed than British and Americans combined, but there is no doubt in anyone's mind that the war was caused by Germany 's aggression.
And in response to the German blitz on London, the British wiped out the entire city of Dresden , burning to death more German civilians than the number of people killed in Hiroshima.
Moreover, I could remind you that in 1944, when the R.A.F. tried to bomb the Gestapo Headquarters in Copenhagen , some of the bombs missed their target and fell on a Danish children's hospital, killing 83 little children. Perhaps you have another question?"

Mitchell and Hillary gang up on Bibi

The Israeli political picture is to say the least up in the air.
The PM is finally to be indicted-I assume as soon as a new PM takes over.
Bibi is trying to stitch together a deal for a new govt.,as Livni calls him names(sticks and stones....)
Barak is trying to find a way to stay on as Defense Minister even as his party wants to stay in opposition.Similarly Mofaz of kadimah would like to be defense Min if kadimah would join.
Improved Hamas rockets are still coming in,and the dangers of Hamas, and Iran grow each day.
In the middle of this muddle, comes Sen. George Mitchell.
Why?
Why cannot our govt. give Bibi a chance to form a govt., with agreed upon principles, before trying to apply pressure?Or are they trying to influence the makeup of the new team?ie. force him to accept Livni on her terms?
If my memory serves me right, the last time he was PM, even before his staff knew where the toilet paper was,the American team was there to apply pressure.I had an appointment to see him,and at the last minute was told that it had to be cancelled, while I was sittting in the outer office.I remember the late David Bar Illan, then Bibi's Chief of Staff telling me that the Americans came almost unannounced (Ross or Indyk ?)
And now Hillary comes, despite the fact that Hamas will not recognize Israel . Abbas is not even technically the "President " of the PA., and he minimally controls zero part of Gaza.
It is time for Bibi to bring up once again the 14 objections of Sharon when Israel accepted the road map.
How can there be progress as long as they have Shalit, and continue their rocket barrages?
